a live web-cam situated at the miraflores lock in the panama canal.

the ship my dad is on is sailing through the canal right now, and, supposedly, passing through the miraflores lock about now.

except it's not. there ain't nothing happening in the miraflores lock of the panama canal at 4:37am local time

ohmigod - it's now 4:43am local time and there's a ship moving through the lock!!

we're pretty certain it was dad's ship we just saw!

that is so cool.

the opening track for this album is called "that summer feeling" and it's the best song ever about how it feels when the long hot days of summer finally arrive.

January 2 - Wood And The Aging Process

I seem to be on some kind of a roll, house wise.  Over the past couple of years, in Matthew's room and the hallway, I've stripped the paint off the woodwork so that it shows the original wood finish.  We've also put in four panelled wood doors to the rooms leading off the hallway. I've waxed most of the wood as I've gone, but there's a few areas that I haven't got round to doing, and a few areas that need redoing.

So, today, I did some. It's a really nice thing to do, wax wood. You put some wax on some very fine steel wool, and then rub it in along the grain of the wood. Leave it overnight, and then buff it off with a soft cloth. It leaves a lovely mellow effect on the wood, and over the years it gets deeper and deeper as you put more coats of wax on. Tomorrow I'll try and finish it off.

Soon after I first met Deb we had a discussion on looks and aging. I don't remember the exact conversation or circumstances, although I do know it was early on in our relationship, because now I am way too experienced to fall into the trap of having that kind of conversation with a partner.

Anyway, she must have asked me how I thought she would look in 20 years or something. I replied that I thought she would age like a piece of top quality wood.

She didn't take entirely kindly to the analogy, and, again, I'm now too experienced to make an analogy like that, but it was meant as a sincere compliment. Wood does age well. Time brings out its features and contours and experience.

Time is doing that to Deb. It's a lovely thing to watch.
