We've been waiting for about the last week. Generally they start around 6 weeks. He's been close a few times, but we put that down to wind.

But a couple days ago Matthew smiled for Debbie and today he smiled for me. I'm not sure he knows quite what it means yet, he's still experimenting, but it was a genuine smile.

So nice to see.

The All Blacks lost the test match 27-23 to the Australians today. It's the third match in a row they have lost. This is likely to plunge a good (male) portion of New Zealand into an orgy of doubt, self-analysis, finger-pointing and patriotic exhortations to "get behind the team".

I take a perverse delight in seeing the All Blacks lose.

It's not that I don't like seeing New Zealand sportspeople do well, it's just that I'm tired of the elevation of the team to demi-god status; tired of the endless media and cultural obsession with rugby; and tired of inarticulate callers to talkback sports radio (a secret vice of mine is listening to this) discussing the minutiae of the game calling each other "maaaaate".

And yet I watch about every godamn test match. I'm a male New Zealander, and try as I might to combat it, rugby is a part of my psyche at some level.
