DYLAN

So in an email to friends and family my father called him Joshua Dillon. After Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke he said. I really don't want to reignite the whole Dillon/Dylan naming controversy again. Suffice to say, it's Dylan, it's Welsh, it means “From the sea”, and yes Bob Dylan is an influence somewhere!

Joshua Dylan
18 February, 2002

This is the first time I've actually typed those words — Joshua Dylan. He's big, over 10lbs, but oh so tiny and light when I hold him in my arms. At times today he looked so serious and calm, looking through wrinkled eyes out at the world. I can picture him now and it's all I can do not to jump back into the car and go back to the hospital to be with him and Debbie.

It felt just like when Matthew was born. As he was lifted from the womb there was this overwhelming emotion took hold of me. I had tears filling my eyes and couldn't talk as my voice would break and watched as he took his first breath and started to cry. It's an experience completely on its own. Another being suddenly, miraculously, is as important to you as you, yourself, are. And that may not make sense, but I'm struggling to put it into words.

I'll write more tomorrow, hopefully with some pics! I haven't slept in over 36 hous now and although still hyped am very close to crashing. Briefly, though, Debbie and Joshua are fine. It was a caesarean birth, so they'll be in hospital for a few more days. He's wonderful and lovely and looks like Debbie, so my parents say. She's the most beautiful person I know. They look lovely together.
