nothing today - sorry

September
19 - Preparation I have meant to write over the past couple of days - honest. But I've been so tired at the end of the day, I just haven't had the energy. So, a new tack for today - a morning entry. It's 8.40am on a lovely calm sunny blue-skied Saturday morning. Early enough so the lawn-mowers and home handymen haven't started disturbing the peace. Well, for those who've been following, today is finals day. My basketball team plays the final at 2pm. The team we're playing finished first in the league. We finished second. During the league, we beat them twice and they beat us once. We're going to win today. The champagne is in the fridge chilling. I've been worried all week as I sprained my wrist at the game last Sunday. Each day it's got a little better, but it's still not 100%. Each day I've been trying to exercise it, rolling it, stretching it, pressing it, often painfully. It should be ok today. It will be sore, but I think once it gets warmed up I can play with that. I'm not really superstitious about preparing for a game. Well I am to an extent, but I know it makes no difference in the end - it's how you play that counts. That said, I'll change into my clothes a couple of hours before the game. We have a green uniform with white trim. I play in number 33. Larry Bird's number. Ha! I'll wear a favourite t-shirt and my old tatty warm green sweatshirt with rips from cat claws down the front. My warm-up trackpants and jacket are black, with yellow and green trim. I wear two pairs of socks. One on first, then braces over each of my ankles - a preventative measure as they are both very weak now from past sprains - then the other pair of socks over the braces. My boots are Converse, black. I'll drink a lot of water from now on. About 11am I'll have an early lunch. I'm thinking spaghetti from a can on toast. I may walk down to the shops this morning, but that will be all. I may do some cleaning of the house, but not much. I'll listen to some good music. I'll try not to think too much about the game. That doesn't do much good. I'll get to the stadium about 50 mins before the game starts. When we get on court, I'll shoot some baskets to warm up, maybe run a few lengths, then stretch. Then the team will do lay-ups and shooting in the ten minutes before tip-off. With a minute to go, the coach will call us over and say a few things. Nothing too much. We know what to do. My mouth will be dry. I'll be worried my legs feel lethargic. I'll be nervous then. I'll try not to think about anything but playing minute to minute. Wish me luck. |
