We Won!
25 August, 2001

Ok, so it was the semi-final. Ok, so we've got another game next week. Ok, so I've lost finals before.

But oh my lord victory was sweet today! I'm still on a high. I'm smiling as I write this. This was the scene. The top four teams from the league played in the semi-finals — 1v4, and 2v3. We came fourth, so we played the top team. We'd played them four times previously in the regular season. Lost each one. We'd played them last week and lost by 30 points. They're a cocky team. A mouthy team. We knew that on our day we could beat them, but we hadn't put that day together all season.

The first half goes their way. They lead all the way, but we hang tough and don't let the lead get over 9 points. A crucial 3-point shot right on half-time meant their lead was 6 or 7 points. We were in some foul trouble though. Our big centre had three early fouls in the game, and one of our guards had three also. Half-time we just talked about playing smart, about playing tough, about not wanting to lose.

The second half was ours. We started well and clawed their lead down. We got even. We edged ahead. Our defense was outstanding. We controlled the boards and they started taking poor shots. They called the first time-out. We had the lead by them. Our intensity was palpable. We stumbled a couple of times, but always came up with a big shot, or a defensive play to keep the pressure on. We were up by 11 with 5 minutes to play. It got cut to 6 a couple of times, but never less. They resorted to fouling us. We made our free throws. We won by 10 odd points.

Personally I didn't play that well, but I coached well. It doesn't matter. The whole team stepped up. It was so so sweet. I'm not thinking ahead right now to the final. It's against a team that we beat by 30 points last time we played them. Today showed that doesn't matter. Today showed a season comes down to one or two games.

If you're reading this and thinking this matters a lot to me — well, you're right! I may be close to 40. I may have been playing basketball for over 25 years. I may not have too many years left playing. But I've never won a championship. Not once — summer league mixed-grade doesn't count!

I want to taste that sweetness. I want to savour it. I want it to be this year.
